06 Skills you will build Turn a card
I Web fundamentals Web fundamentals Know HTTP, cookies, sessions, authentication flows and how browsers enforce security. II Networking Networking Understand ports, services, protocols and how networks are segmented. III Windows and Active Directory Windows and Active Directory Know how domains, groups, Kerberos and delegation work, since most companies run on them. IV Linux Linux Be at home on a shell, with files, permissions, services and logs. V Scripting Scripting Write small tools in Python or Bash to test a hypothesis quickly. VI Ethics and law Ethics and law Stay inside written scope, protect client data and stop when something unexpected happens. VII Reporting Reporting Rate severity fairly and write fixes that a busy developer can apply. 07 Is penetration testing legal? Yes, when it is authorised in writing by the owner of the systems and stays inside the agreed scope. Testing anything without permission is a crime in most countries, including India under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Can I start as a penetration tester straight away? Some people do, but many start in IT, development or a SOC first. Knowing how systems are built and defended makes you a much better tester.
What does Root teach in this path? Root teaches how weaknesses work and how to find and report them on lab systems built for that purpose. You never test real systems you do not own.
